Sulfur Studios is pleased to host Timothy Harding in the ON::View Residency at Sulfur Studios from May 12th - June 4th, 2022.

About the Artist

Timothy Harding explores the fluid relationship between pictorial space and the three-dimensional realm; between drawing, painting and sculpture. While his installations are a direct response to the architecture they inhabit, his dimensional paintings are a more singular instance of exploring how an object occupies space. Harding’s work often pulls from a universal bank of imagery – hard-edge geometric forms such as grids – to evoke the familiar and engage the viewer through visual means that avoid direct narrative. Harding is an Associate Professor of Art at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. He received an Education Fellowship at the Wassaic Project in New York, and has also been awarded Residencies at 77Art, Vermont and Central Trak, Dallas. About the Project

While in residence at Sulfur Studios, Timothy Harding will be pursuing a project centered around the construction of a painting stretcher bar system as site-responsive object. This work is an extension of his long-standing interests in exploring the relationship between the space of painting and the physical space they inhabit as objects. When viewed, one will have the opportunity to reconsider how they interpret artworks as static objects to be seen from a set vantage point or as works that can be navigated in a physical sense that allow them to change and unveil themselves over time.

Over the course of a month, Harding will construct the stretcher system in a manner that emphasizes it as a sculptural object that uniquely responds to its environment and can be taken in from a variety of perspectives: seen from the street-facing window, and navigated from within the studio during open hours. Oftentimes viewers of two-dimensional works of art do not see the reverse side of an object hanging on a wall or consider it beyond its flat surface depictions. With this project Harding, will provide the opportunity for forms that are traditionally considered flat to be seen as sculptural. As a project that will evolve over a set duration, viewers will have the opportunity to experience the work as an object constantly in flux with no two viewings being the same experience.

The ON::View Residency Program is presented with investment by the City of Savannah. Special thanks as well to our Residency Sponsors Green Truck Pub, Starlandia Supply, and Starland Yard.
